Meg Webb, set to be returned as the Member for the Legislative Council seat of Nelson, has hailed the election result as a powerful affirmation of an independent Upper House and a clear demand for enhanced integrity, transparency, and accountability in politics.

“The people of Nelson have sent a loud and decisive message to the Liberal government,” Ms Webb stated, emphasizing her commitment to ensuring this message is heard and acted upon.

Across every Nelson polling booth, voters prioritised a candidate they trust to champion integrity, decency, and honesty, and to diligently hold the government to account.

This outcome, Ms Webb highlighted, represents a resounding vote by the people of Nelson for an independent Upper House.

Voters in Nelson have unequivocally rejected government bullying and questionable dealings with corporate interests, along with the practice of pork-barrelling. Instead, they have expressed a strong preference for community involvement in planning, better affordable housing, the protection of the UTAS Sandy Bay campus, decisive action on climate justice, and the reclamation of local waterways.

“Recognising the count is still to be finalised, the resounding vote of confidence provided by the Nelson electorate is overwhelming,” Ms Webb remarked. “The best way to say thank you is by rolling up my sleeves and getting back to work delivering for my community.”

Ms Webb extended her appreciation to her political opponents, Nathan Volf (Greens) and Marcus Vermey (Liberal), acknowledging their campaign efforts and the importance of a vibrant democracy that encourages diverse candidates.

Looking ahead, Ms Webb expressed her enthusiasm for continuing to work with her colleagues and the community. “I also say a huge thank you to everyone I have worked with over my first term and with whom I look forward to continuing to work to deliver a fairer, inclusive, compassionate and sustainable Tasmania, she concluded, setting a positive tone for the upcoming term.”
