Tasmanian clubs and volunteers were recognised at last night’s Good Sports Awards at the MCG in Victoria.
In a fantastic achievement for the Bruny Bowls and Community Club, it was awarded the national 2024 Good Sports Community Club of the Year for its outstanding dedication to fostering a safe, welcoming and connected community.
Also recognised from the Tasmania were:
Tasmanian University Football Club (Tas Club of the Year)
Dominoes Basketball Club (Tas Club of the Year R/U)
Daniel Ogg, Dominoes Basketball Club (Tas Volunteer of the Year)
Helen Lynd, Ulverstone Basketball Association (Tas Volunteer of the Year R/U)
“As a small club in a small community, we joined Good Sports to be part of something bigger,” Bruny Bowls and Community Club spokesperson Christopher Mann said.
“It has reinforced our commitment to creating a safe, family-friendly environment and strengthened our reputation as an inclusive, welcoming space. This award recognises the heart of our club – our people. We’re incredibly proud to be a place where everyone feels welcome and valued.”
Good Sports is Australia’s largest community health sports program, aiming to build strong, sustainable community clubs.
Supporting more than 12,000 clubs nationwide, including almost 600 in Tasmania, Good Sports helps create better environments for players, volunteers, supporters, and officials by addressing key issues like alcohol, drugs, smoking, mental health and safe transport.
“Winning a national award really demonstrates and highlights that we stack up with the best clubs nationally,” Clubs Tasmania project manager Tom Darke said.
“Our local clubs work tirelessly to give back to their communities. Awards like these are a well-deserved recognition of the countless hours volunteers dedicate to their clubs.”
