Vast numbers of people turning up to VOTE SALMON OUT!

It is clear to NOFF that recent salmon farm and EPA events are now impacting island life for Tasmanians – the tide has turned on big salmon.

Despite the rain and rising tide, Tasmanians turned out in numbers 2000 strong to say no to foreign-owned corporations who put greed and profits over our environment, animal welfare and our communities.

The energetic crowd – said no to corruption and the salmon barons’ influence over government and the EPA—absent in protecting our cherished environment. Absent too was the local member and Federal Minister for Fisheries, Julie Collins.

The resounding chant of VOTE SALMON OUT! should strike fear into both state and federal Liberal and Labor politicians. Tasmanians know who will stand up for them and the environment. The huge crowd leaving with a bumper sticker ‘VOTE SALMON OUT’ will spread the word all over our island.

“Its never surprising to see so much community support for the environment in Tasmania. Our clean green brand is a core value to most, and now that our island way of life is being impacted by industry pollution and the government has played a key role in its cover up – the people are responding.” says Jess Coughlan, NOFF campaigner.

“Crowds beyond our dreams and the passion should be giving Liberal and Labor Nightmares.” – Lisa Litjens, Acting President, Neighbours of Fish Farming.

Speakers included: Richard Flanagan, author of Toxic, Peter George, independent candidate for Franklin, Owen Fitzgerald, Greens candidate for Franklin, Kirsten Bacon, local resident and film producer, and Gerard Castles from Killora Community Association, Bruny Island.
