The Tasmanian Government is seeking community feedback on options for a second River Tamar Bridge between the East and West Tamar Highways.

It is hoped that feedback received during the consultation period will be valuable in informing future planning and designs and in seeking funding for the new crossing.

Five options have been identified for the bridge, each of which aim to improve connectivity between the East and West Tamar Highways and give people greater choice when travelling around the greater Launceston area and through the CBD.

These locations were chosen on the basis of engineering assessments including traffic modelling and geotechnical investigations. The alignments are concept only and do not represent final locations.

Any potential impacts to properties in the vicinity of the alignments will be discussed directly with affected landowners.

Community members can have their say on the new crossing options from Monday, 31 March 2025 to Friday, 18 April 2025 at the West Tamar and Launceston City Council offices, or online via an interactive map on the Transport website at www.transport.tas.gov.au/new-tamar-crossing

Four information sessions with the project team will also give community members the opportunity to provide feedback in person. These sessions will be held on:

  • Monday, 7 April 2025, from 4pm to 7pm at Exeter Community Hub (11 Murray Street);
  • Tuesday, 8 April 2025, from 10am to 1pm at Launceston Mall;
  • Tuesday, 8 April 2025, from 4pm to 7pm at Windsor Park Precinct; and
  • Wednesday, 9 April 2025, from 4pm to 7pm at QVMAG (2 Invermay Road, Invermay).

To date, the Tasmanian Government has committed $80 million towards the project, with the Australian Government recently committing a further $20 million to planning and design of the bridge.

Further public consultation will be held once necessary investigations, planning and design work for the chosen option have been completed, based on the feedback received.

More information about the project can be found on the Transport website: www.transport.tas.gov.au/new-tamar-crossing.
