The Tasmanian Government is seeking community feedback on options for a second River Tamar Bridge between the East and West Tamar Highways.
It is hoped that feedback received during the consultation period will be valuable in informing future planning and designs and in seeking funding for the new crossing.
Five options have been identified for the bridge, each of which aim to improve connectivity between the East and West Tamar Highways and give people greater choice when travelling around the greater Launceston area and through the CBD.
These locations were chosen on the basis of engineering assessments including traffic modelling and geotechnical investigations. The alignments are concept only and do not represent final locations.
Any potential impacts to properties in the vicinity of the alignments will be discussed directly with affected landowners.
Community members can have their say on the new crossing options from Monday, 31 March 2025 to Friday, 18 April 2025 at the West Tamar and Launceston City Council offices, or online via an interactive map on the Transport website at www.transport.tas.gov.au/new-
Four information sessions with the project team will also give community members the opportunity to provide feedback in person. These sessions will be held on:
- Monday, 7 April 2025, from 4pm to 7pm at Exeter Community Hub (11 Murray Street);
- Tuesday, 8 April 2025, from 10am to 1pm at Launceston Mall;
- Tuesday, 8 April 2025, from 4pm to 7pm at Windsor Park Precinct; and
- Wednesday, 9 April 2025, from 4pm to 7pm at QVMAG (2 Invermay Road, Invermay).
To date, the Tasmanian Government has committed $80 million towards the project, with the Australian Government recently committing a further $20 million to planning and design of the bridge.
Further public consultation will be held once necessary investigations, planning and design work for the chosen option have been completed, based on the feedback received.
More information about the project can be found on the Transport website: www.transport.tas.gov.au/new-

Many thanks are due to the Government and the City Council for fulfilling our long awaited dream of Launceston having a second Tamar Bridge. All folks between Rosevears, Legana and Riverside are waiting eagerly for the expected easier travel through the city to reach the East Tamer highway.
While this project will save a significant amount of travelling, while also reducing CO2 emissions considerably, it is worth noting (as per the map above) that for the maximum benefits of the residents it should be located at the furthest point north, as indicated by the red colour at North Riverside.
The logical reasons are:
1. Building a second bridge in North Riverside will significantly reduce the travel distance for the residents at Riverside and Legana, as well as in Rosevears’ areas.
2. The areas served at north Riverside and Legana, as well as Rosevears, are considered heavy populated areas and are rapidly growing.
3. At North Riverside, and on the way to Legana, the West Tamar road is the widest and consists of two lanes in either side that allow smooth diversion of the traffic to the new bridge.
4. Southern Riverside is very near the city and it takes less than 5 minutes to cross over to the East Tamer highway with the current bridges, hence there is no significant benefit or reduction in travel distance if the bridge, located as per diagram above, with three adjacent colours in the south Riverside and near Trevallyn where two existing bridges are already much nearer by a few minutes when travelling by car from south Riverside.
