Salmon at the bottom Of the barrel

How a lobby organisation attempts to link farmed salmon critics to genocide campaigns

Tasmania’s multinational-owned salmon industry has dredged the bottom of the barrel in searching for a new line of attack against its critics.

Struggling to regain social licence in the face of increasing public opposition, the industry has linked the critics to international concerns about genocide in the Middle East. (See also: The Hobart Mercury, Dec 24)

Salmon Tasmania has attacked the critics – including Neighbours of Fish Farming (NOFF) – for working with progressive international organisation, Ekō, raising awareness of the industry’s operations in Macquarie Harbour, blamed by Federal scientists for the potential extinction of the Maugean skate.

“We’re proud of our campaign with global campaigners like Ekō which has alerted tens of thousands of Australians to the destructive practices of the salmon industry,” says NOFF president, Peter George

“As a progressive global campaigner, Ekō, advocates for many causes which may include a stand against genocide and it may be entirely appropriate that it does so.

“Meanwhile, NOFF and its many Tasmanian allied organisations stand against the destructive open-net salmon pens encircling our island.

“Full stop. The salmon lobby exposes its desperation with such laughable tactics but it’s very much par for the course.
