The Goods Shed was built at Macquarie Point as a railway goods shed around 1915.
The shed has remained standing despite a lot of Hobart’s rail infrastructure being removed during the twentieth century.
The freight industry used it for a time, and it is now a multi-purpose venue.
The shed was recently listed as a heritage site on a provisional basis. The listing has caused another headache for the state government because the shed is located at the site of the proposed AFL stadium.
The latest plan appears to be to relocate the shed within the Macquarie Point precinct. The cost of moving the shed is estimated by economist Nicholas Gruen at $18 million.
