Media release – Coalition Against the Anti-Protest Laws, 23 July 2022
Collective Statement
We met on 12 July 2022 and discussed our shared concerns about anti-protest laws that are currently before the Tasmania parliament.
We are in universal agreement that protest is a time honoured right and a central pillar to a healthy democracy. One that should never be extinguished. While these laws are designed to divide our communities, this coming together has proven the opposite. We are united in our opposition to this erosion of democratic rights.
lutruwita/Tasmania has a strong history and tradition of protest across the political spectrum. This has helped create the lutruwita/Tasmania that we are all proud of. These laws give special considerations to corporations over the rights of citizens and lack appropriate safeguards to avoid misuse. We oppose them in their entirety.
These laws are not an expression of who we are as a free, equitable, and democratic society. We invite everyone to join us in our opposition.
