Media release – Senator Anne Urquhart, Chief Opposition Whip in The Senate, Senator for Tasmania & Chris Lynch, Labor Candidate For Braddon, 11 August 2021
COMMONWEALTH BANK MUST CANCEL PLANS TO CLOSE QUEENSTOWN BRANCH
Senator Anne Urquhart today described plans by the Commonwealth Bank to close its Queenstown branch as ‘disgraceful’.
Senator Urquhart said:
“It is absolutely sickening that on a day when the Commonwealth Bank has reported that its annual profit jumped 19.7 per cent, it cuts this important regional service for the west coast.
“The Commonwealth Bank is sending a clear and loud message to regional Tasmania that it doesn’t care and doesn’t see itself as having a role in supporting local businesses and local community.
Chris Lynch, Labor candidate for Braddon said:
“The bank has announced an $8.8 billion profit to the share market and, at the same time, demonstrated its contempt for the people and businesses of Queenstown.
“They need to reverse this decision right now.
“It’s a heartless decision that will have a huge impact on the lives of vulnerable west coasters, many who don’t have access to the internet.
“It will also hit local businesses who do their daily banking.
