Hobart travel survey – Bicycle Network Tasmania has launched a survey to understand how people get to Hobart’s city centre, what they do there and what transport options they want to see. “We are asking people how they get into Hobart, what they do in the city and what other transport options they’d like to see, like separated cycleways,” Public Affairs Manager Alison Hetherington explained. “Research elsewhere has found that businesses typically underestimate the numbers of people who ride, walk or catch public transport to get to shops and services. Information from our survey of visitors to Hobart will be matched with interviews of city businesses to see if this is the case in Hobart.

breast milk donation – more than 300 pre-term babies at the Royal Hobart Hospital have benefited from donated breast milk to help them grow healthy and strong in the absence of their mother’s milk. The program started in Tasmania four years ago to improve the survival rates of pre-term babies by helping them to grow stronger and healthier with breast milk instead of formula. Sourced from Brisbane, the pasteurised donor human milk is safe to use with strict donor screening and pre and post pasteurisation testing of milk. New mothers of premature babies are grateful to have access to the program and for the benefits it brings their baby.
People interested in donating breastmilk for pre-term or unwell babies can find out more at https://metronorth.health.qld.gov.au/rbwh/healthcare-services/milk-bank
NDIS care survey – in 2017 and 2019 Carers Tasmania surveyed Tasmanian carers about their experience with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The 2020 survey will help build understanding of the experiences of carers and care recipients through the NDIS in the past twelve months. It will provide an evidence base for Carers Tasmania to continue to advocate for Tasmanian carers needs. They also want to hear from carers of people who have applied for and been deemed ineligible for support through the NDIS. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete and is open until 25 September 2020, find it here.

In 2020 Scinema launched a new award category specifically for junior filmmakers aged 17 years and younger. Ahead of Scinema 2021, they have opened this category early to enable more young people to enter their films. Get your students (or kids if you’re looking for a fun activity to do at home) to use the power of film to explain a STEM concept they have recently learnt about, tell a story about how science affects their lives, or show how science can solve real-world problems. The winning film, as well as Scinema-curated favourite entries, are screened to thousands of people across the country.
