Young Tasmanians to have their say on Transport in Tasmania

Over one hundred and fifty young Tasmanians aged 12-25 years will travel to Launceston today to voice their concerns, contribute ideas and identify solutions at the 2021 Tasmanian Youth Forum (TYF) Transport. Key findings from the event will be used to inform future policy directions for Tasmania.

Tania Hunt, CEO of the Youth Network of Tasmania (YNOT) said “Poor public transport and barriers to obtaining a driver’s license significantly impacts a young person’s ability to fully participate in their communities. This year’s topic will explore young people’s vision for transport in Tasmania’s and solutions for overcoming the barriers they face.”

TYF 2021 provides a platform for your people to share their thoughts, experiences, ideas and solutions regarding transport in Tasmania. The program will focus on transport accessibility, environmental impacts, inclusivity, private transport, personal safety, road safety, and transport in regional areas. Young people will share their views on what they would like to keep, change and create to fully participate in their communities.

“Young Tasmanians have told us that not having access to safe, reliable, timely and affordable transport impacts their ability to get a job, access education and training, health care and other essential services as well as participating in recreational activities.” Ms. Hunt said.

“Young Tasmanians chose the TYF 2021 topic and have played an integral role in planning and developing the program for the event. Young people will also be actively involved in facilitating discussions on the day.” “TYF continues to attract a high level of interest from young Tasmanians, which clearly shows that young people value the opportunity to have their voices heard and contribute to solutions.”

An online survey will be launched after the Forum to provide more young Tasmanians with the opportunity to share their concerns and ideas. The Forum and survey results will be presented in a formal report to Government and key Tasmanian decision makers for consideration in future policy development processes.

TYF 2021 Transport will be held at Launceston Conference Centre from 10am – 2.30pm on Friday 4 June 2021.  Industry representatives, decision makers and interested parties are invited to observe the presentation session of the Forum which will begin at 1:30pm.
