Contemporary Art Tasmania Opens Applications for Studio Program

Contemporary Art Tasmania (CAT) has announced applications are now open for its 2026 studio program, offering two non-residential, one-year studio spaces for Tasmanian artists.

The studios, located at 27 Tasma Street, North Hobart, above CAT’s offices, provide dedicated creative space alongside professional development opportunities and access to CAT staff and support.

Since relaunching in 2021, the studio programme has integrated studio practice with other CAT programmes, offering both one-year and two-year spaces to support Tasmanian artists in realising new exhibitions and enabling in-depth artistic development.

Studio residents receive access to the Project Space for presentation of new work or work in progress, profile and development opportunities through CAT’s public and digital programmes, and engaged feedback with visiting professionals.

Applications will be assessed by a panel including the CAT Engagement Coordinator, representatives from CAT’s Programming and Engagement Committees, and two external peer assessors. Successful applicants will be notified in December and can move into their studios from that time.

Assessment criteria focus on clarity of artistic goals for the year, how the studio will support upcoming projects or exhibitions, the benefit to the applicant’s artistic growth and development, and demonstrated commitment to building an ongoing creative practice.

Applications can be submitted through the online form or by interview. Those wishing to discuss alternative application methods should contact [email protected] or phone (03) 6231 0445.

Limited parking is available in the carpark (untimed) or street parking (timed).

Information about physical access and other details is available here.

Applications close midnight, Monday 8 December 2025.
