Acting Anti-Discrimination Commissioner confirms rights and protections for Tasmanian migrants following anti-immigration rallies Pia Saturno

Acting Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, has today confirmed the rights of Tasmanian migrants to live, work, and learn in Tasmania, free from discrimination and abuse.

Following anti-immigration rallies in the country over the weekend, Pia Saturno said it was important migrant communities in Tasmania were feeling safe and knew they were protected.

“All Tasmanians have the same rights under the Anti-Discrimination Act,” Saturno said. “It doesn’t matter whether you were born here, or came here from overseas. You are protected under the Act from discrimination and abuse.”

“If you have been targeted because of where you were born, the colour of your skin, or what language you speak, you are able to make a complaint to my office,” Saturno said.

“It doesn’t matter what visa you are on, or how long you have been here. The Act applies to everyone.”

Saturno called on all Tasmanians to support one another and report any race-based abuse or harassment. “If you see racism, or if you hear racist abuse, please do not stay silent. Please report this to my office.”

“Our state has benefited from diversity and the contributions of migrants. It is so important we stand together”.

Reports and complaints of race discrimination and abuse can be made to the Office of the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner.
