TEC - Next Steps as Counting Continues 3

Media release – Tasmanian Electoral Commission, 25 July 2025

Counting continues: next steps in finalising the 2025 State election results

With first preference counting now largely complete, the Tasmanian Electoral Commission has outlined the key steps ahead as it prepares for the final stage of the 2025 State election count.

This week, telephone votes were counted on Monday, provisional votes and all out-of-division votes were completed by Thursday, along with all postal votes received so far. Rechecks have been ongoing throughout the week.

From noon tomorrow, preparations for the Hare-Clark count begin with the amalgamation of ballot papers. This step brings together ballot papers for each candidate, from all polling places, to enable the distribution of preferences.

Further preparations for the Hare-Clark count will include a preliminary distribution of preferences for leading candidates who have already exceeded the expected quota. This will take place on Monday and then pause until all final postal votes are returned.

The deadline for return of postal votes is 10 am on Tuesday. Any final ballot papers received by that time will be included in the count and added to first preference totals. A final update of first preferences will be posted to the TEC website once that process is complete.

From Tuesday afternoon, the full Hare-Clark distribution of preferences will commence. Updates will be posted on the TEC website throughout the week as candidates are elected or excluded.

This process will continue until all seven members are elected in each division, which is expected by Saturday 2 August.
