The temperature dropped below freezing that night,
as the news spread across the island.
Many felt a numb sense of déjà vu, as they watched the news reports and
reached for another blanket,
fearful of their electricity bills.
Another election they couldn’t afford to have,
yet couldn’t afford not to.
They didn’t need a higher education to understand that the powers-that-be were gambling with large amounts of their money,
and that each time they failed to get a return
it was taking the food from their table.
They were dammed if they did and damned if they didn’t,
and would it really make a difference now?
Many felt powerless, disillusioned, but mostly just tired.
They woke to a thick, blanketing white frost
– nothing grows in these temperatures,
one by one the remaining leaves fell from the trees
… as the circus rolled into town.
