Another travel voucher initiative will be rolled out this winter, set to cost the Tasmanian Government $10 million.

The scheme hopes to breathe life into the state’s hospitality and tourism sectors during the traditionally quiet mid-year period.

The ‘Eat Local, Stay Local’ scheme will distribute 100,000 vouchers worth $100 each to Tasmanians with applications for the handout starting2 June.

Recipients will be randomly allocated through a ballot process at the end of June and will have until the end of October to use their voucher

Premier Rockliff said previous schemes showed they were effective in injecting money into local economies, local businesses and the regions.

“Whether it’s a hotel room, a meal or an adventure, we’ve got part of the cost covered, so get out and explore Tasmania this winter,” he said.

While the full list of participating businesses is yet to be released, it will include accommodation providers, hospitality venues and tourist attractions throughout the state.

The Tasmanian Hospitality Association (THA) welcomed the announcement, saying it would encourage Tasmanians to visit and explore their own backyards, which in turn provides a significant injection into the economy.

“Winter is always a challenge for many operators – particularly in our regional areas – and this voucher scheme will help stimulate demand, get locals through the doors and keep staff employed during the off-peak season,” said THA CEO Steve Old.

“It’s not just about encouraging people to dine out or book a weekend away. It’s about keeping the lights on and tills ticking across our hospitality sector through the cooler months.

“Previous schemes have shown how effective this kind of support can be for local economies, and it’s great to see the Government continuing to back our industry.”

The THA is encouraging all eligible businesses to register for the program and take advantage of the increased foot traffic and bookings it will bring.
