Celebrating 200 years of legal excellence: Bicentenary of the inaugural Solicitor-General
Tasmania’s legal profession is marking a significant milestone with the Bicentenary of the Appointment of the Inaugural Solicitor-General.
This important occasion will be commemorated with a special reception hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Governor of Tasmania, and Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers AO at Government House on 28 April 2025.
The event will celebrate the enduring legacy and contributions of the Solicitor-General’s Office over the past 200 years.
Attorney-General, Guy Barnett, said the Office of the Solicitor-General has been a cornerstone of Tasmania’s legal framework since its establishment in 1825.
“The Solicitor-General’s Office has played a pivotal role in ensuring the observance of the rule of law, offering expert legal counsel on constitutional, administrative, and commercial matters, as well as safeguarding the interests of both the government and the public,” the Attorney-General said.
“The Bicentenary of the Solicitor-General’s Office is a testament to the enduring importance of independent legal advice in our democratic system and marks a significant chapter in Tasmania’s legal history.
“The Tasmanian Government acknowledges the dedication and expertise of those who have served in this esteemed role by upholding justice and legal integrity in Tasmania.”
This bicentenary milestone of the appointment of the inaugural Solicitor-General follows the 200-year anniversary of the Supreme Court of Tasmania last year, the oldest in Australia.
