Media release – Rebekah Pentland MP, Miriam Beswick MP, 11 January 2025
RTI REVIEW CONFIRMED
Northern independents Miriam Beswick and Rebekah Pentland have welcomed the appointment of Professor Tim McCormack and Associate Professor Rick Snell to review Tasmania’s right to information framework.
“This review was a key part of our agreement with the Premier,” Mrs Beswick said.
“Professor Tim McCormack and Associate Professor Rick Snell are highly respected and are the ideal choices to carry out this important work.
“Greater transparency in government is a priority and this review will be crucial when it comes to improving Tasmania’s RTI system.
“The public deserves timely and reliable access to information. Tasmania should have the best RTI framework in the country.
“I wish Professor McCormack and Associate Professor Snell all the best with this important project and encourage relevant stakeholders to fully assist them with their work.”
Bass independent Rebekah Pentland said the RTI review is the latest in a list of important pieces of work secured via the agreement with the Premier.
“Saul Eslake’s investigation into Tasmania’s finances and Dr Nicholas Gruen’s stadium report have started important statewide debates,” Mrs Pentland said.
“This sort of robust, independent analysis allows Tasmanians to be better informed and will hopefully lead to positive policy change.
“It’s a very healthy thing and we’re very proud that it was part of our agreement to offer the Premier confidence and supply.
“An improved right to information framework will give Tasmanians greater confidence in government.
“Transparency is the key to trust and voters have a right to know.”
The report will be provided to the Premier by 30 June 2025.
