Plans for new ferry terminals gather pace
The expansion of the River Derwent Ferry service is gathering pace with the Greater Hobart councils considering plans for new terminals as part of the expanded ferry network.
Preliminary analysis including geological testing has been undertaken at several sites across Lindisfarne, Sandy Bay and Wilkinsons Point to determine the locations that could support new ferry terminals.
Led by local engineering firm Burbury Consulting, the findings of this work – including initial concept design options for the new terminals – will be considered at meetings of Hobart and Clarence councils later this month.
Councils expect to undertake detailed public consultation regarding the new ferry terminal designs and locations later this year.
The work to progress specific terminal sites follows the Greater Hobart Councils securing $20 million from the Australian Government towards the project at the 2022 Federal Election, followed by a matching $20 million from the Tasmanian Government during the State Election earlier this year.
Quotes to be attributed to Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds:
“The Greater Hobart Mayors have been strong advocates for further investment in ferry services for many years and it’s exciting to see the project progressing, including plans for a new terminal in Sandy Bay.
“An expanded ferry network will deliver broad economic and social benefits – both in the immediate term through direct job opportunities and in the long term through infrastructure improvements, enhanced productivity and improved social connectivity.”
Quotes to be attributed to Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley:
“With the support of the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, the Greater Hobart councils are getting on with the job of delivering new ferry terminals.
“In the interests of seeing the expanded service up and running as quickly as possible, we need to get the right infrastructure in place to support the ferry network. Of course, public consultation will be an important part of this process.
“A new terminal at Lindisfarne will complement the State Government’s plans to redevelop the existing Bellerive terminal, providing better amenities for Clarence residents and increasing connection between the eastern shore and the rest of Hobart.”
Quotes to be attributed to Kingborough Acting Mayor Clare Glade-Wright:
“We remain committed to seeing the ferry network expand south to Kingston at a future stage.
“It is clear that further investment is required to make this longer-term vision a reality, with a number of key factors such as the location and commuter parking requiring further consideration.”
Quotes to be attributed to Glenorchy Acting Mayor Sue Hickey:
“Given ongoing pressures on our roads and buses, growing the ferry network will improve the commuter experience for all Greater Hobart residents in a cost effective way. More transport options will reduce traffic on our major arterial roads and provide a better commute for local residents.
“Importantly, an expanded ferry network will support events – including at MyState Bank Arena via a new terminal at Wilkinsons Point.”
