Caketivism highlights environmental destruction on Quamby Bluff
Will a cake replica of one of Tasmania’s most beloved mountains win the show?
Deloraine community members have entered a cake that is a replica of Quamby Bluff–– an iconic landmark in the northern Tasmania’s Meander Valley region––into the competition at the local show.
Quamby Bluff is loved by many, including community members that have formed a group called Hands Off Quamby which aims to protect the forested slopes of Quamby Bluff from further logging by Sustainable Timber Tasmania.
The cake makers, Lucinda, Tyler and Stuart, all members of Hands Off Quamby Bluff, shared the following statement at the outset of the Deloraine Show:
“We hope to spread the word of Sustainable Timber Tasmania’s plans to log the forests of Quamby Bluff through the well loved art of cake making “ said Lucinda.
“This cake took us 15 hours to create. This is a moment of time compared to the decades taken for the forests of Quamby Bluff to grow. Sustainable Timber Tasmania reduced the forests of our beloved mountains to ashes leaving a scar on the mountainside for all to see.“ said Tyler.
“The forests of quamby are not only of global significance. They are a source of water for local residents, a home for endangered wildlife, and an inspiration for communities across Tasmania.” said Stuart.
Quamby Bluff is a large dolerite monolith standing before the Great Western Tiers and Central Plateau World Heritage Area. The towns of Deloraine and Meander have Quamby Bluff as their southern backdrop. Smaller villages flank the mountain, where its presence dominates the landscape.
The Hands Off Quamby Bluff community group is raising awareness of the destructive logging of the forests of Quamby Bluff. In 2022, Sustainable Timber Tasmania clearfelled and burned over 20 hectares of forests on the slopes of Quamby Bluff. It has future plans to log up to an additional 110ha hectares of forests.
Editor’s note: We can provide an update, namely that the cake won Second Prize at the Deloraine Show.
