Runners Hit the Highway for Archie’s 100
A group of committed runners will be getting up close and personal with some of Tasmania’s major roads and highways this week as they kick off the ‘Archie’s 100 Awareness Tour’ which commences in Stanley on Tuesday morning.
Two teams of seven runners will complete the gruelling 400km journey over four days as they raise funds for a number of projects within Tasmania’s children’s wards. The tour also aims to increase organ and blood donation awareness and acknowledge the roles and significance of Tasmania’s emergency service workers.
The run is one of a number of events that are part of ‘Archie’s 100’, which honours the legacy of seven year old Archie ‘Bear’ Green who tragically passed away in a boating accident in 2020.
Archie’s dad, Damien, said that after the accident Archie donated his organs which essentially saved the life of five strangers which made him a ‘real life superhero’.
“Archie’s 100 is all about celebrating Archie’s wonderful legacy along with raising funds and awareness about organ and blood donation. We are really hoping to spread the word in the towns and communities that we will pass through over the coming days to really educate people on the importance of being a blood and organ donor,” Mr Green said.
Starting in Stanley on Tuesday, the run will pass through Burnie, Penguin, Westbury, Launceston, Campbell Town, Ross and Oatlands before continuing into Hobart and concluding on Friday around 5pm at the Hobart Brewing Company.
“No doubt we’ll all be very tired, but I’m sure we’ll be very keen to celebrate the event’s conclusion with some beers and cheers with family and friends. The support has been amazing and Hayley (Archie’s Mum) and I would personally like to thank all the businesses and people who have made this event possible,” he said.
