Tascal Scottish Country Dancers present: The Hobart Winter Ball Weekend

There’s something for everyone, dancer or not. (note various locations for activities)

Friday 18th August 6-8pm

Unshackled/ Hobart Penitentiary Chapel Tour

Discover a grim side of Hobart’s past at Unshackled / the Convict Memorial Hub at the Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site. Launched in June 2023, be one of the first to see this exciting, very original MONA-like digital history presentation on Tasmania’s convicts with a Scottish twist. Over a million digitised records are used to create an interactive visualisation of convict experience. Cnr Brisbane & Campbell Sts. $25 pp includes supper at St George’s Church Hall. Scottish dancers can instead choose to brush up on some dances ready for the Ball on Saturday night at St George’s Church Hall, $15 pp. Afterwards, both groups meet together at the church hall for supper.

The Grand Event 

Enjoy the festivities of the Winter Ball with exhilarating music from Australia’s premier Scottish dance musicians Chris Duncan and Catherine Strutt. Dances* are taught in the weeks leading up to the Ball (no teaching at the Ball) but spectators are welcome to enjoy the thrilling music, watch the spectacle of the dancing and enjoy a sumptuous supper at a reduced price. Themed to celebrate the centenary of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. Hobart Town Hall Macquarie St. Doors open 7pm, Grand March 7.30pm. Richmond Picnic

Picnic day at historic Richmond village to relax with friends & dance, chat, play music or listen and watch. If you’re curious about Scottish country dancing come along and meet some dancers and discover why it’s so addictive and try a dance or two. If you play an instrument join in the tunes with Chris and Catherine. Or just relax, chat and listen and watch. Lunch included. $10 pp, 11am to 3pm. Enjoy an optional tasting experience of Tasmania’s finest whiskies, gins and spirits at Drink Tasmania Tasting House, a short walk from our picnic at the Richmond Town Hall. Raise a glass to the RSCDS! Tastings additional payable on the day to Drink Tasmania Tasting House $35 brown spirits, $20 white spirits or liqueurs.
