Transport: the next stop for reducing emissions in lutruwita/Tasmania

Climate Tasmania is hosting a politics in the pub event on August 2nd, where we’ll discuss the next stop for emissions reductions in lutruwita/Tasmania: electrification of vehicles, and increased public and active transport.

Speakers include Sarah Russell (RECFIT), Professor Richard Eccleston (UTAS Policy Exchange), Anthony Broese van Groenou (Good Car Co.), Alison Hetherington (Bicycle Network), and Rachel Hay (Climate Tasmania).

This builds on our recently released report on solutions for emissions in the transport sector, available here.

Attendance is free, but registration is essential: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/transport-the-next-stop-for-reducing-emissions-in-lutruwitatasmania-tickets-668572547487?aff=oddtdtcreator

Last year, the Tasmanian Government committed to a target of net zero emissions by 2030. But our net zero status isn’t secured, given our continuing emissions and reliance on unpredictable land use and forestry offsets.

Transport, Tasmania’s second highest emitting sector at 21%, provides excellent potential for abatement of carbon emissions in the short term. But with electric vehicle ownership at less than 1% and public transport and active transport use low, more needs to be done to incentivise uptake.

With the Tasmanian Government currently developing a plan for transport sector decarbonisation which is due by the end of the year, there’s no better time than now to talk about reforming Tasmania’s transport.

Speakers

Dr Sarah Russell is the Director of the Climate Change Office of Renewables, Climate and Future Industries Tasmania. Her team is leading the development of transport decarbonisation policies for the Tasmanian Government.

Professor Richard Eccleston is the Director of the Tasmanian Policy Exchange, specialising in research on reducing emissions in lutruwita/Tasmania. He’s currently writing a paper on the measures needed for decarbonisation of the transport emissions in our state.

Alison Hetherington is a Public Affairs Advisor for the Bicycle Network Tasmania. Alison advocates for better infrastructure, laws, policies and programs to encourage more people to ride for transport and enjoyment.

Anthony Broese van Groenou is a co-founder and Director at Good Car Co. In recognition of the climate crisis, the Good Car Co. work with communities throughout Australia to deliver affordable electric vehicles.

Rachel Hay is a researcher, writer and advocate for climate action in lutruwita/Tasmania. She wrote Climate Tasmania’s recent paper on transport sector decarbonisation solutions and will moderate the event.
