Report – Institute for Social Change, UTAS, February 2023

What helps and hinders a healthy diet in Tasmania?

The latest report from The Tasmania Project explores enablers of and barriers to a healthy diet for Tasmanians.

Respondents reported that having the time and money to prepare healthy meals was the biggest enabler to a healthy diet. Perhaps unsurprising, then, that a lack of time and money were the most commonly reported barriers to eating a healthy diet.

Other barriers include limited choice of food suppliers and lack of proximity to food providers, stress, poor mental wellbeing, and living alone (such that it affected motivation to cook healthy food) and living with others with challenging diet preferences or unhealthy habits.

Enablers included good quality local suppliers, well equipped kitchens, and strong motivation, which was sourced from respondents’ enjoyment of cooking, social support, and personal health concerns and goals.
