Labor continues to ignore local community

Federal Member for Bass Bridget Archer has called on the Federal Government to stop ignoring the needs of the Flinders Island community and deliver on funding for the Safe Harbour project.

“After securing funding for the project in the 2019 federal election, I continued to work very closely with the Council and the community and in March this year I secured the additional funds required to ensure the Safe Harbour project could get underway,” Mrs Archer said.

“This provided the Council and the Community with the certainty needed to begin the project later this year.

“However, the project now faces further cost blow outs after Labor placed the project under review and as with the Exeter Show and Recreation Centre, the Federal Government is placing partisan politics over the needs of local communities.

“I’m a regular visitor to Flinders Island, so know how important this project is to the region and during my visit yesterday heard how Labor’s partisan delays are putting hard-fought for community projects like Safe Harbour at risk.

“Minister Catherine King and her Tasmanian counterparts, including Senator Helen Polley, need to visit the Island urgently and explain why their project has been delayed and when they can expect to see the funds delivered.

“Labor must also answer as to whether they will cover additional costs for the project as a result of its continued inaction.”
