Michael Ferguson, Acting Premier and Minister for Health – 18 July 2022
Coronavirus Update
Tasmania has recorded 1,411 new cases overnight.
The total number of active cases currently stands at 10,178 and we now have more than 204,000 Tasmanians who have recovered from COVID-19.
There are currently 44 people in hospital being treated specifically for COVID.
Public Health officials have previously explained that fluctuations in daily case numbers are a part of living with COVID and it remains our collective responsibility to look out for one another by continuing to follow COVID-safe behaviours.
Sadly, I can confirm three males in their 70s and a female in her 90s have passed away.
I extend my sincere condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones.
With COVID still circulating in our community it’s important to continue following the COVID-safe behaviours – practice good hand hygiene, follow social distancing and I’d encourage you to wearing a mask when you can’t, test when you have symptoms and stay home when you are unwell.
Among persons hospitalised with a COVID-19 diagnosis in Tasmania, those unvaccinated were three times more likely to die than those who had received 2 or more doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. This is why the most important thing you can continue to do to protect yourself, your family and the community is to roll up your sleeves and get vaccinated when you are due.
If you haven’t already, make a booking with one of the many providers across the state and get your vaccination as soon as possible.

What’s the plan, Premier?
The AMNF has announced they will commence strike action next week due to the lack of action by the Rockliff-Ferguson government to address workloads for exhausted nurses.
The Rockliff-Ferguson government has failed to support our health workers as a new wave of COVID impacts our community, economy and health system.
The lack of action by the Rockliff-Ferguson government to improve working conditions for health workers after years of dealing with COVID has left many at breaking point.
The growing numbers of hospitalisation and tragic deaths to COVID has been predicted to worsen by Premier Rockliff, in a sign that things will only get harder for health workers in an already struggling hospital system.
What is Premier’s Rockliff’s plan to curb the growing number of COVID cases?
Premier Rockliff must be transparent about the advice he is receiving and what action he will take to support those working in our health system who are at the frontline responding to the worsening crisis in our hospitals.
It is becoming increasingly obvious that the health portfolio is getting neglected by the Premier who has taken on too much and is at best, a half-time health Minister.
