Revised Parliamentary Sitting Robs Democracy

Tasmanians lost a week of Parliament while the Liberals were busy with internal housekeeping and doing their third cabinet reshuffle in a year that we are not yet a third of the way through.

Despite commitments that the lost sitting week would be made up later in the year, the revised schedule of the House of Assembly is, in fact, identical to the current schedule apart from the week that was lost, and with an extra week allocated to the Legislative Council.

The failure to make up for lost Parliamentary time robs democracy and points to a government that still doesn’t like scrutiny.

The Liberals have had to filibuster and drag out their own legislation this year to cover their weak legislative agenda. Barely a year into the new term, and they seem to have run out of ambition for our State.

It seems while a third of their Cabinet have recently abandoned ship, the rest are busy hiding below deck in a hope to escape scrutiny.

Tasmanians deserve a Government with nothing to hide. Instead they have a Government that seems it has nothing to do, and no apparent ambition for reform or the policy shifts needed to meet the challenges of this difficult decade.
