Vale Peter Cundall

lutruwita/Tasmania has lost one of its kindest, most engaging and feisty sons, with the death today of Peter Cundall.

Peter was loved by generations of Tasmanians. He will be very much missed.

Peter Cundall’s unbridled delight in the natural world shone throughout his long contribution to public life on ABC radio and television.

He was also an unashamed conservationist who raised his voice to protect this island’s forests, and to stop the Gunns’ Tamar Valley pulp mill.

It was Peter Cundall who told us, ‘We must never, never, never give up’ the fight.

A defining feature of this great man was his courage.

In 2009, Peter Cundall was arrested outside Parliament House for again taking a stand against the mill.

Peter was a rebel, for all the right reasons. Through his broadcasting, Peter also taught us the importance of the simple things in life – good people and time with nature.

Vale Peter Cundall. The Greens are so thankful for your long and generous life.

Peter Cundall fought for Tasmania’s forests.

Peter Cundall, ABC radio and TV gardening guru, was a valiant campaigner for Tasmania’s forests and wildlife, Bob Brown said in Launceston today.

“Peter was appalled by the destruction of native forests. He called it a crime and joined the biggest public rallies for forests and against pulp mills in Launceston, Hobart and regional Tasmania. He was outspoken against what he called Gunns’ ‘dirty, stinking’ pulp mill proposed by the company and Labor Premier Paul Lennon for the Tamar Valley. The general public was more on side with Peter’s views than with the governments of the day.”

“I first encountered Peter Cundall’s powerful advocacy for nature when he spoke out against the flooding of the franklin river. He joined a public meeting in the Lemonthyme Valley near Cradle Mountain in the 1980s and that forest is now also protected. He spoke out for the Great Western Tiers, the northeast forests of Tasmania and the waters of Bass Strait threatened with toxic outfall from proposed pulp mills. His advocacy for nature was matched by an active and heartfelt support for social justice and opposition to the cruelties of war such as he had experienced in his younger life.”

“Peter’s hugely popular on-air gardening advice programs had subliminal but powerful messages for protecting and honouring of Australia’s wild places and wildlife. His passing will bring tears to the eyes of countless thousands of Australians who avidly viewed his love of gardening and all things green on Gardening Australia,” Brown said.

“Millions of Australians will be putting a figurative arm around Tina and her family today as we share memories of this wonderful man’s life over the last 94 years.”

Vale Peter Cundall

On behalf of the Tasmanian Government, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Peter Cundall, who passed away yesterday.

Peter was a much-loved and recognisable figure in Tasmania having lived and worked in Launceston for many years, including on ABC radio and as the long-time host of Gardening Australia.

On a personal note, Peter and I had many conversations over the years on a range of topics and while we didn’t always agree, he always had my respect for his immense passion and courage to stand up for what he believed in.

His contribution to Tasmania and our way of life cannot be understated, and I know his passing will be mourned by many in the community.

Vale Peter Cundall.
