EXTINCTION REBELLION HUNGER STRIKE COMPLETE – HOBART

The 7-day hunger strike for climate action ended with a feast on the steps of parliament in Hobart. The hunger strikers were demanding the Australian government stop taxpayer subsidies for and approving new coal and gas projects, and the Tasmanian government declares a climate emergency to reflect the urgency of the climate crisis.

Of the original five hunger strikers, two were able to complete the full seven days, although several people came in to strike for 24 hours or more at a time. All were present to break their fast in front of parliament, symbolising the abundant future they believe is possible. They ate watermelon, potato salad, pumpkin soup, and blueberries.

“It has been one hell of a week, and I hope I never have to do something like that again,” said PhD student Micah Landon-Lane, age 28, who was on hunger strike for the full week. “But I think this action has had a big impact, and it has been very empowering to make a stand to demand a safer future.

“That said, our governments are still totally ignoring the crystal-clear science on the climate crisis, and there is a lot more to do to achieve real climate action.”

“Our work is done, and now it’s Morrison and his government’s turn to put their big boy pants on and get on with the job,” said scientist and mother of two Sharee McCammon, age 55. “He calls his policy of increasing coal and gas production against the backdrop of a climate emergency the ‘Australian way’, but I disagree. Normal people standing up to protect our future is the real ‘Australian way’.”
