Junction Arts Festival’s Songs For Our Planet is shaping up to be a festival highlight, with seven Tasmanian singer songwriters and three visual creatives joining the youth choir for the concert performance on 3 September.
The event will bring together Tasmanian musicians, artists and youth to perform in a unified concert of voices, ideas and protest for our the planet.
Tasmanian singer songwriters Tom Fowkes, Oscar Lush, Billie Raffety, Warren Mason, Kenna Reid-Clark, Celeste Evelyn and The Runaway Belles will showcase original pieces as part of Songs For Our Planet.
Joining them will be the Songs For Our Planet Youth Choir, a group of young Tasmanians who are eagerly rehearsing in the lead up to the once-only performance. Launceston’s Travis Hennessy will direct both the choir and the Songs For Our Planet concert.
As well as live music performances, the multi-sensory experience will feature film and photographic work from artists and activists Ramji, Anna Brozek and Tim Cooper, sharing their stories of environmental protest.
Musician and artist Warren Mason said his involvement in Songs For Our Planet came about because of what he believes in.
“As a very proud first nations man aged 52, I have seen in my lifetime what we humans have done to this and our only planet,” he said.
“So if I can do my bit to highlight injustice against our mother earth we win.”
Junction’s Artistic Director, Greg Clarke, said that the idea for the project was inspired by the Global Youth Climate Strikes.
“Audiences will be moved by amazing voices, inspired by incredible people making a difference and immersed into Tasmania’s stunning wilderness areas,” he said.
Tom Fowkes.
For northern Tasmanian folk singer, Tom Fowkes, his songwriting was influenced by his upbringing.
“Growing up in a family actively involved in conservation, I was keen to share songs written from this planet for this passionate project,” he said.
Songs For Our Planet will be performed at The Princess Theatre at 7:30pm on Friday, 3 September 2021.
