University appoints masterplanners for Sandy Bay
The University of Tasmania has appointed leading Australian architecture and design firm Clarke Hopkins Clarke to lead the masterplanning process for the future of the current Sandy Bay campus.
Following the release of the urban design framework and masterplan for the University’s future city campus, work now begins on a long-term strategic plan for the sustainable development of the Sandy Bay site.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Rufus Black said the University would maintain ownership and steward the development of the much-loved site in ways that support the community, the environment, and the local economy.
“The urban renewal project aims to create a sustainable community with a mixture of housing, including attainable housing, education, aged care, commercial and retail spaces, and associated infrastructure. It will also remain the home to the University sporting fields and facilities,” he said.
Dean Landy, partner at Clarke Hopkins Clarke, will lead a multi-disciplinary team of architects, urban planners and specialised consultants to create a plan for the site. The creation of the plan will include extensive consultation with the community throughout the remainder of 2021.
Throughout the process, the masterplanners will work with UTAS Properties Pty Ltd (UPPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the University, which it has created to manage the transformation of its Sandy Bay and Newnham campuses. This enables the University to focus on its core business of learning, teaching and research with impact for and from Tasmania.
The community is invited to have their say and register for upcoming information sessions via the online engagement platform, https://www.reimaginesandybay.com.au/

This is a land grab by the maaaaates!
The city of Hobart, without its major employer in every nook and cranny, is no longer a University city. Once you have sold the land bank you will never get it back, however you spin the project.
The dimwits, who govern us so badly, hate excellence – concept they do not understand, aspire to, or consider.
Their world is that of the mean, the devious, of lies, of corruption and endless deceit, for they have found that this is how they achieve power. Destroy the ABC, destroy our University, destroy any Centre of Excellence. The likes of our current PM and his Deputy gained their power by lies and deceit.
In Tasmania we do it better .. you just buy power and then dole out the rewards – while nobody notices, or even cares. This polluted, overpopulated, deforested, rotten, stinking world that our pollies have created is about to implode.
We even force-feed the fish to make up for those stolen by a freezer trawler in a one-time hit on our stocks.
Which planet next?

At Vice Chancellor Rufus Black’s presser on 17 May this year, the following exchange took place with regard to future development of Sandy Bay:
Journalist – Alexandra Alvaro: Does that mean that your intention is to sell that land?
Rufus Black: We will work to develop the land with others. The university aims to retain underlying ownership of the land over the long run.
