Media release – Concerned Residents Opposed to Westbury Prison Site, 23 June 2021
Planned Drilling on Proposed Northern Regional Prison Site – Brushy Rivulet Reserve, Westbury, Tasmania
The Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE) have given consent for drilling to commence on Monday 28 June 2021 (unnamed and unsigned – copy attached).
In the past fortnight we have had 68.5mm and it is currently raining – more rain is predicted over the coming week. If machinery were to enter the site in the current conditions, it would without a doubt create significant damage to the environment. Another major concern is the Spring survey has not been undertaken and immense damage can occur on flora that is not easily visible. Once again, it feels a bit like ‘groundhog day’!
On the previous attempt to bring in machinery to drill test holes, weather conditions were similar and this ended in enormous damage to the environment, bogged machinery and a halt in proceedings.
