Greens Release Plan to Make Corporates Pay Their Fair Share

The Greens launched our plan to make big corporations pay their fair share today. Our plan raises an additional $1.23 billion for the State Budget over the forward estimates.

For decades, big corporations and property developers have used political donations to purchase power and influence with the major parties. They have made extreme profits, and paid a pittance of tax, royalties and license fees, for far too long.

This concentration of power and wealth is crippling for society, and democracy. It means less money going into hospitals, schools and building new homes for Tasmanians.

The Greens understand it’s a serious problem when in a pandemic the richest 250 Australians increase their wealth by 20%, but 30,000 more Tasmanians fall into poverty. Something has to give.

Our plan to make corporations pay their share would see big mining, gambling and fish farm companies pay a fair rate for their exclusive licences.

It would also ensure the profits of developers who benefit from rezoning decisions are taxed properly, as they are in the ACT.

This will mean we can fund better health care, truly free public education and build more homes for Tasmanians.

While the Liberal and Labor parties are cuddling up to big corporations and selling out Tasmanians, the Greens are here to stand up to them and make them pay their fair share for the benefit of the Tasmanian people.

Greens will tax crucial Tasmanian businesses and jobs out of existence

Crazy new plans put forward today by the Greens would tax critical Tasmanian industries out of existence, cost thousands of jobs and create an economic crisis in Tasmania.

The Greens are proposing to introduce new taxes on the mining and salmon industries which would cripple them.

The Greens crazy tax grab will jack up mining royalties by 150 per cent and slug the salmon industry to the tune of $350 million.

The Greens want to strip Tasmania’s job creating industries of all their profit and drive them out of businesses.

These are industries that employ thousands of Tasmanians and contribute millions to our economy.

The claim that the Greens tax hit will raise $1.2 billion is a sick joke because it doesn’t take into account businesses that go broke and can’t be taxed.

Shockingly, the Greens plan also places an additional penalty on landowners which – in the midst of a housing and homelessness crisis which the Greens claim to care about – would stop rezoning applications, stop new subdivisions and push up house prices beyond the reach of Tasmanians looking for a roof over their heads.
