The first EMRS poll of the new year has revealed that Tasmanian voters have maintained their support for the Liberal state government, and that there have also been no notable shifts in support for the other major parties.

After excluding undecided voters, the Liberal state government retains the clear lead, at a high 52 per cent of voter support in February 2021, exactly equivalent to the level recorded in the previous November 2020 poll. The latest results reveal that the Labor opposition has gained little ground in support over the past quarter, up by a marginal 2 points from 25 per cent in November 2020 to 27 per cent currently. The latest poll of 1,000 Tasmanian adults was conducted from the 15th to the 23rd of February 2021.

“These latest results indicate that Tasmanian voters have been strongly inclined to maintain their support for the incumbent Premier and his government. EMRS suggests that it reflects an ongoing endorsement of the government’s decisions particularly in relation to COVID-19, including the relaxation of social distancing restrictions and of the state’s border controls to ease travel to and from the state,” said Paul Jamrozik (EMRS’ Research Manager).

The current 52 per cent in voter support for the Liberal government represents a significant 25 point lead over Labor, remaining largely unchanged from the 27 point lead it held in the last poll. There has also been little movement in decided voter support for The Greens, up by just 1 point to 14 per cent currently; while a slight shift downward was recorded in support for an independent or other minor party, from 11 per cent to 7 per cent currently.

The proportion of voters nominating Premier Gutwein as their preferred Premier in the February 2021 poll remained unchanged when compared to the previous poll, again standing at 61 per cent.

“The lack of a shift in voting intentions is particularly evident in the 61 per cent of those polled again rating Premier Gutwein as their preferred Premier, and the 26 per cent again nominating Labor’s Rebecca White as their preferred option, these results exactly replicating those recorded in the November 2020 poll. Thus, Premier Gutwein has maintained his clear 35 point lead as preferred Premier over the Opposition leader, lending further evidence of the high level of personal support he is continuing to receive from voters,” said Mr Jamrozik.

“In all likelihood, developments in the months ahead related to COVID
