Well, the story started back here when we made the case for considering a new Tasmanian flag. That post featured a proposed design by Flags of Australia.

Our second in the series showcased an animal-free design by Daniel Sobkowski.

We encourage people to keep sending in designs. We recently received this email along with a new proposal:

My name is Dec Browne, I’m in Year 10 at school, and though I currently live in Canberra, I look back on my toddlerhood years in Tasmania fondly, it being the state where most of my father’s family comes from. I enjoy designing graphics, logos and flags, and when I recently read your article asking readers to suggest new designs for the Tasmanian flag, my passion ignited.

I have designed this flag, following the ‘Australian pale’ template – currently used by the ACT, the NT and the NT police – with a Tasmanian identity in mind. I took the colours red and white from the torse of the Tasmanian coat of arms, and added the face of a Tasmanian devil – one of the state’s best known animals. I hope that this flag can help Tasmanians – both young and old – find a state identity that they can all share.

Well many thanks to Dec for his contribution, shown at the top of the page. Interesting thinking about the colours, and showing the devil front on is also a bold move.

He provided an updated version of the Australian coat of arms too. Yes, with a devil in the detail! A New State Flag for Tasmania: Dec Browne design 4,
