Processes have been launched to release the first parcel of land at Macquarie Point, The Escarpment, to market.

The Macquarie Point Development Corporation is seeking pre-registration of interest from developers and/or consortia considering being a part of this unique development opportunity, prior to the commencement of a formal competitive bid process.

“Tasmania, like the rest of the world, is facing extremely challenging times, but we are working hard to continue delivering on key infrastructure projects,” said Minister for State Growth Michael Ferguson. “This once-in-a-lifetime development at Macquarie Point will be enjoyed by Tasmanians for many generations.”

The Escarpment will be the first in a multi-stage land release by the MPDC, which they describe as “an unprecedented opportunity to invest in one of Australia’s most prized locations.”

This parcel of land comprises approximately 8,797m2, with three building envelopes totalling around 6,676m2. The pre-registration of interest process will be managed by Tasmanian realtors Knight Frank.

Interested parties are encouraged to submit a registration of interest form before 29 May 2020, in order to receive a direct copy of the Corporation’s upcoming Request for Expressions of Interest.

Presenting mixed use development potential, The Escarpment forms part of one the last remaining infill sites adjacent to a working port on the edge of a capital city. The site falls under the Sullivans Cove Planning Scheme 1997, administered by the City of Hobart, and is zoned mixed use.

The overall development potential of Mac Point includes; commercial space, an exhibition venue, an arts and cultural precinct, accommodation, tourism infrastructure and fifty per cent allocated for public space.

Those interested are actively encouraged to complete and submit a Pre-registration of Interest Form  in order to receive a direct copy of the Corporation’s upcoming Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI). This does not lead to assessment or shortlisting of any kind.

Whilst the Corporation’s timing for the release of the REOI is yet to be announced, it is anticipated to occur prior to the fourth quarter of 2020.

“The Government development reset of the site was approved by the Hobart City Council and the Tasmanian Planning Commission in October 2019 in line with the Government’s direction,” said Mary Massina, CEO Macquarie Point Development Corporation.

The Escarpment is one of three parcels of land zoned mixed use under the planning scheme with development potential that may include hotel, commercial, cultural, office exhibition, residential and retail.

“The overall development potential of the Mac Point site includes; commercial space, an exhibition venue, an arts and cultural precinct, accommodation, tourism infrastructure and a fifty per cent allocation for public space,” Massina said.

No Stadium

Tasmanian Times contacted MPDC for comment on a proposal contained in the AFL Taskforce Report, issued in February, for an Australian-rules football stadium at Macquarie Point.

“The current masterplan for Macquarie Point does not include a stadium,” clarified Massina. “The Government is getting on with the job of delivering the masterplan that has been consulted with the Tasmanian community and approved by the Tasmanian Planning Commission.”
