Seven aspiring conductors to work with Elena Schwarz, recently appointed to prestigious LA Philharmonic Dudamel Fellowship
The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra announces the seven successful participants selected to take part in the inaugural Louise Crossley Conducting Workshop, an elite conducting training opportunity with a focus on female conductors taking place later this year.
Named in honour of the late Dr Louise Crossley, whose 2015 bequest was intended to develop and identify opportunities for female conductors, the Louise Crossley Conducting Workshop will take place in Hobart August 12, 2018.
From 28 applications received the seven participants selected are Laura Barton, Renee Heron, Vivian Horn, Eugenie Tamplon, Helen Thomson, Nickea Warrener and Jen Winley.
The conductors will rehearse works by Mozart, Grieg and Ravel with pianists Jennifer Marten-Smith and Karen Smithies. Katherine Parton, founder of the Young Women’s Conducting Workshops with the Royal Philharmonic Society, UK, will be joining the workshop to speak about her doctoral thesis topic “Origi, cognition and body: musician and conductor gesture and interaction”.
Nicholas Heyward, TSO Managing Director said, ‘This workshop offers a tangible opportunity to nurture female conductors and further honours Louise’s wishes to make a significant contribution in this area.’
Participants will benefit from an intensive workshop with Elena Schwarz, former Assistant Conductor of the TSO and recently appointed to the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s prestigious Dudamel Fellowship programme for the 2018-19 season. Her appointment will see her conduct performances in the Los Angeles Philharmonic season and she will work with esteemed international conductors including Gustavo Dudamel, Daniel Harding, Susanna Mälkki, Ludovic Morlot, John Adams and Michael Tilson-Thomas.
An alumnus of the Australian Symphony Services International Conductor Development Program, Elena Schwarz’s year-long appointment with the TSO in 2017 as Assistant Conductor was also supported by Dr Crossley’s bequest. She is currently engaged as Assistant Conductor to Mikko Franck at the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in Paris and conducts the TSO in several performances throughout 2018.
