The Federal Government must assure Tasmanians that they will not proceed with the changes to the GST as reported by News Limited this morning.
These changes would drastically see the GST formula changed to Tasmania’s disadvantage, and could, according to some estimates, see the State lose $168 million a year.
Tasmanians should take no comfort from any guarantees about top-up payments because they are at the whim of the government of the day and can be taken away as easily as they are granted.
The Premier must stand up and tell his federal colleagues that this is not acceptable and that he will fight to protect Tasmania’s share of the GST.
Andrew will be available to discuss this matter at 12:15pm at Parliament House lawns, Hobart.
