Civil liberties groups have criticised NSW Police plans to ban people from entering a music festival if sniffer dogs detect illicit substances, regardless of whether drugs are found in a search.

In a statement on Tuesday, assistant commissioner Peter Thurtell said drug detection dogs would be working outside the Above and Beyond festival at Sydney Showground on Saturday, and that “police will exclude any person from the venue that the drug dog indicates has or who has recently had drugs on them, regardless of whether drugs are located”. Greens NSW MP David Shoebridge told Melbourne radio station 3AW that “drug dogs get it wrong between two thirds and three quarters of the time” …
