Independent MP Andrew Wilkie has revealed former Australian Security Intelligence Service operative “Witness K” and his lawyer, former ACT attorney-general Bernard Collaery, have been charged for revealing Australian espionage operations against the East Timorese government.
Speaking in parliament on Thursday, Wilkie said “the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions has filed criminal charges against Collaery and his client”. In 2012, Witness K revealed ASIS had bugged the East Timorese cabinet room to help the government gain an advantage in maritime border negotiations. Wilkie noted “the ASIS operation occurred at the same time Islamic terrorists bombed the Australian embassy in Jakarta in September 2004” …
