The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to creating a strong and vibrant cultural and creative sector to enhance Tasmania’s brand and reputation.
That’s why we have committed just under $2.8 million of funding in this year’s State Budget to support the operation of expanded facilities at the Theatre Royal.
The funding will support the Theatre Royal Management Board to meet additional operational costs associated with the $96 million Hedberg development – the new creative industries and performing arts centre currently under construction.
The new facility, once complete, will significantly increase the footprint of the area that will need to be managed by the Theatre Royal. It will include expanded front of house and foyer facilities along with the inclusion of a modern, flexible studio theatre space.
This new exciting development will be a game-changer for both the presentation and consumption of local performing arts, and a welcome contribution to the urban fabric of our capital city.
The Theatre Royal will necessarily be closed to the public from October 2018 for approximately six months to enable building works to occur, however their box office will continue to operate from an offsite location.
The Tasmanian Government’s investment will increase jobs and opportunities for Tasmanians and visitors to enjoy world-class performing arts at the Theatre Royal.
