Against a record number of entries world-wide, Liminal Studio’s Coastal Pavilions at Freycinet Lodge Tasmania has been nominated as a finalist in the Hotel and Leisure category for the prestigious 2018 World Architecture Festival awards.
Run by tourism operator, RACT Destinations, the Coastal Pavilions opened to guests in March this year. Liminal Studio was engaged to transform the visitor experience as part of the renewal of the Freycinet Lodge accommodation, established in the 1990s.
The nine Pavilions present a point of difference to the existing cabins, providing a high-end offering reflecting its unique setting, discreetly nestled into the natural surroundings on the coastal edge. Each pavilion has its own private deck and outdoor bath along with floor to ceiling curved glass windows, enabling an immersive connection to the landscape.
“We drew inspiration from the fluid forms of the nearby bays and layered coastal granite rock formations, while paying homage to the character of the National Park they nestle into. The exteriors are treated in a recessive way, so they become a backdrop and don’t compete with this beautiful landscape,” explains Peta Heffernan, cofounding Director of Liminal Studio.
“We invested considerable time to ensure the Coastal Pavilions created an immersive, sustainable, site specific experience for guests, while acknowledging the privilege to inhabit such a beautiful part of the world”, Ms Heffernan stated after the announcement. “We are thrilled the jury for the World Architecture Festival has recognised our contribution and the collaboration with our client and skilled team. It reinforces the talent on this creative island is operating on a global stage. For the next step we look forward to presenting the pavilions to some of the world’s most interesting and influential practitioners of architecture.”
Liminal will present their project to the delegates at the Festival in November, to be held in Amsterdam. The winners will be announced at the Festival’s closing gala dinner.
