The Government has repeatedly indicated we will not do anything to compromise the safety of Tasmanians or that is in breach of the National Firearms Agreement (NFA).
This remains our very clear commitment to the Tasmanian people.
It is important to note that changes being proposed as part of the Tasmanian Government’s firearms policy already exist in at least one other jurisdiction.
Information released by Tasmania Police this week under RTI confirms that the Firearms Act 1996 requires a substantial revamp regardless of the proposed reforms.
We have received strong input on our policy from a diverse range of stakeholders and the Legislative Council inquiry will provide an opportunity for even more Tasmanians to have their say on firearm reform, ahead of legislation being drafted.
The drafting and planning process is when the costing process will occur.
The Government remains committed to ensuring community safety whilst also acknowledging the legitimate needs of various sporting, hunting and farming uses of firearms in Tasmania.
Michael Ferguson, Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management
