Join AIA Tasmania’s Urban Group with the Refugee Group and look in a mirror on Saturday 30th June at Parliament House Lawns between 11am-12.30pm to see images of families seeking asylum, locked up by the USA Government and the Australian Government and then sign up for a Better Plan.
We can build a safe, inclusive community while welcoming those who need our help. We also benefit from the contributions new Australians make to our community.
Both sides of our Federal Politics have failed to deliver a fair, safe and orderly system for refugees. The current approach isn’t helping people, with secrecy and cover-ups telling us that something is wrong.
A Better Plan includes;
Boost Australia’s Aid Program to help neighbouring countries protect and support refugees better
Make sure the most vulnerable people are resettled, within our region or globally
Include refugees in our existing visa programs
Support assessment of refugee applications in the region within a defined time period
Run timely search and rescue operations Of course, Australia will never be accepted as a visionary international leader while its reputation remains so badly tarnished by its shocking offshore detention policy. A prompt and fair outcome for 1600 people who remain on Nauru and Manus Island is a fundamentally important first step, one which will be seen by our neighbours as a signal that Australia is ready for a new level of constructive engagement.”
