On Saturday 23rd June 2018 I attended a community meeting in support of tenants at Common Ground Goulburn St. and learned that the facility is undergoing funding and staffing cuts.
Tenants are very worried that from July 1st 2018 their services, support and staffing are to be cut back leaving some tenants feeling unsupported and unsafe when Anglicare take over the tender.
The main reason for these changes is due to a change in tender, the Common Ground facility currently being run by the Salvos is being taken over by Anglicare from July 1st and here is the problem; the Anglican church can’t afford to successfully run such a facility whilst at the same time trying to sell all their assets to fund the response into the institutional child abuse redress scheme.
In short, Anglicare is broke.
The federal government and the Tasmanian state government must invest in public housing in Tasmania immediately; there is an urgent need.
Sincerely,
Adam Crawford
