A sad day for pyjama manufacturers …

*Image: Flickr, Michael R Perry, Pinball Machine Art

It is a sad day for pyjama manufacturers worldwide with the untimely death of Playboy founder and self-described feminist Hugh Hefner, 91, yesterday.

His passing is a sad reminder that time is fleeting even when and if you have been waiting, in the case of one feminist I know, “Forty fucking years!” for him to die and that perhaps we should not make such a mistake in the future.

Hefner, famous for misattributing the same quote every one misattributes to Gloria Steinem “Women need men like a fish needs a bicycle”, when he maturely pointed out “Look at her she married a man!”, will be sorely missed by fondue party worshippers, the gherkin and little franks on sticks obelisk society, and wankers alike, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

A number of feminists such as myself shall also don our own pyjamas and dance around a bonfire like the Witches he correctly assumed we were. Bring out your best and dance a little jig if you will ladies. Perhaps send a card of condolence to a cravat wearer in your neighbourhood . Remind them that he fought hard for women’s reproductive rights particularly if they had a curfew and expressed their organic and irrepressible desire to perform sexuality exactly how men wanted them to.

He was a leader in his generation, forging access for the ‘every man’ to female objectification. As such, he shall be mourned by esteemed leaders of the free world such as Donald Trump as much as by your average fuckwit on the internet who has been emboldened to finally tell women what they think of them.

“He gave men like me a voice. Not just a wank, but a voice.” said blue collar bus driver Kelvin who was echoed in solidarity by several members of the Dubai Golfing Society and Deep Philosophical Thinkers ™ around the world. While the latter tend to use big words infused with post-modernist theory, Kelvin and his mate Bluey here in Australia use the more refreshing colloquialisms when encountering females on the internet, calling them ‘skanks’, ‘hos’ and other terms of endearment.

Feminists around the world have been informed by the Hefner estate that he planned something modest for his funeral edition. In honour of his competitor in misogyny Larry Flynt of Hustler magazine Hefner has apparently chosen to have an artist’s rendition of himself being put through a meat grinder wearing his trademark black (“black means serious” he famously once said) silk pyjamas. But so far sources have been unable to verify which brand. Interestingly, Versace might be considered too ‘gay’. Not that Hef was homophobic of course, his endorsement of manufactured ‘lesbian’ pornography directed exclusively by the male gaze is testament to that. But Dolce and Gabbana are less ‘flouncy’. Some more American American men are concerned he may not be wearing all-American made silk pyjamas, but whatever anyone’s concerns, he will no doubt be wearing his favourite black velvet loafers by designer Di Fabrizio.

In other news, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have sent their sincere condolences but say , “We will still be launching an investigation in to how many male silk worms died during Hefner’s long and industrious career.” Spokesperson Ingrid Internalisedmisogynist said “While we all might like the feel of silk, here at PeTA we shall be wearing black cotton pyjamas, ethically sourced from forced grain-fed women who have been treated with non-animal dyes. We’ll miss Hef and we support the pyjama industry, but he and they, would respect our decision much as we always respected his.”

Another group in mourning is the Liberals Against being Forced to Choose Between Coke and Pepsi (LABFCBP) who said, “Hef helped us a lot. He told us that we needn’t be ashamed whatever we chose to mix with our Jack Daniels. There is an interview where he said as long as it has Jack Daniels in it it doesn’t matter.”

The LABFCBP are currently launching a petition to be included in next year’s Pride March but so far are worried that despite Hefner’s legacy, the event might be still considered a little too ‘gay”.

Guardian: Hugh Hefner: effusive tributes ignore Playboy founder’s dark side The man who created Playboy, who has died aged 91, has been remembered as an American icon – but others recall a controlling, emotionally abusive manipulator …

Guardian: I called Hugh Hefner a pimp, he threatened to sue. But that’s what he was Now that he’s dead, the old sleaze in the Playboy mansion is being spoken of as some kind of liberator of women. Quite the opposite …

Most men probably thought Hugh had a life in heaven. I don’t!
Fantasy and reality are two different things.
Living an addicted life pumped with Viagra 24/7 would be far from bliss I’d imagine.
I wonder how much of the real and natural world this guy ever saw.
He probably never experienced natural wholeness in the outdoors.
He may have claimed he was very happy, but I’d be amazed if there wasn’t inner sadness.
Despite his personal shallowness, women did flock to him for their own shallow reasons.
    We humans are weird things!

Yes Ted, poor Hef. Must have been hell for him. All those shallow women, what can you do? End capitalist misogyny? Damn these women and their feminine wiles.

Bronwyn, if you cant handle the politically incorrect comments then dont provide the article in the first place.

Congratulations to Hef, he provided the best textbook material for post war youth to have a laugh and get on with the tit bits of life.

Hugh Heffner was the embodiment of the sexual revolution in ways that Gloria Steinham and her feminist compatriots were not.

And the reason why feminism went nowhere and a ‘liberated’ male sexual paradigm got the nod of history was that the latter embodied the principles of indulgence capitalism.

Women were trapped into a male version of sexuality which saddled them with a sex-on-demand expectation, their gender use as sexual sales icons and then they were collectively cheated into unreconstructed domestic relationships that left their domestic role exactly as had been, while they worked second jobs as economic auxiliaries for consumer industries in the same way as they had for war industries.

Heffner’s Playboy businesses were the absolutely shameless embodiment of the new position of women in a culture that was redefining liberty as deregulated disinhibition and replacing moral character with inconsequential egoism without boundaries.

Heffner became a respectable businessman by creating ‘wealth’ out of turning women into ciphers who willingly and enthusiastically participated in their own enslavement.

At a larger level, Heffner created/shaped the roll out of consumer service industries generally, where female sex and sexuality became part of the fantasy construction of the new toys and games economy.

Heffner’s wealth and fame was nothing more than the fortuitous meeting of his own degenerate character tripping over an overwhelming opportunity in an economic system that had massive surplus energy to drive out of the constraints of traditional need and wants, into a fantasy driven junk economy that would not only wreck the biosphere, but the social software of its human servants.

And the takeaway for women has been that they have been made the victims of their demands for new roles in a late capitalist world order populated by men not terribly dissimilar in their attitude to Hugh baby.

I feel a bit of old fashioned puritanism coming on….

#6 Thank you Christopher, your comments are always thought provoking and informed unlike the other men who commented on this article. I agree with your position on Heffner totally.

It is indicative of the mind set of many men that one comment here was deleted because it was offensive, discriminatory and degrading to women and the other man commenting used Heff’s death as an opportunity to berate women associated with him.

Yes Simone, misogyny lives, although I doubt that
any practitioners will put their hand up to admit it let alone take the time to think about why they are labelled such.

    Keep it coming Christopher……

Thanks for that Isla. I was going to add that Heffner wasn’t just a moral degenerate in the adult sense, but also extremely immature as a character; i.e., an adolescent man child.

His view of women was that of a fourteen year old.

Women have obviously suffered in a direct and easily observable way from the roll out of consumer capitalism and the indulgence economy. But I would add that it has been just as disastrous for men in a less obvious way and Heffner and what he replicated of himself into the culture is the answer; not only an infantilization of men that made them an ‘its all about me’ childlike liability in any long term relationship, but their sense of historical exceptionalism distrupts their moral judgement both in the private and public realm.

I think Heffner’s childlike egoistic self obsession and lack of consequential thinking was a template for the 2008 GFC. The bankers of the world shared a lot of his really crummy values and lack of adult integrity. All they could think of was getting their hands on the genitals of the financial system, and screwing it as if there were no tomorrow, which there very nearly wasn’t.

In some places, women are so desperate to get a real male adult who is actually a responsible and considerate character, they will buy back into patriarchy and even coach him back into the role of being a dependable family leader….Well no….just being dependable…

Thanks a lot Hugh. And if he had a soul, which is extremely unlikley, but if he did, may it burn in hell.

#5 Do you have a thing for me, Robin, because I’m not the author of this article? Am I your vision of a feminist, man-hating ‘femi-nazi’. Do you have dreams of dominating me, and reporting the encounter, suitably embellished, in a Hefner-style ‘lads’ magazine’?

Or, god forbid, do I visit you in fantasy armed with whips and chains, and force you into submission – tweaking your manly ‘tit bits’ in the process.

Please stop me now – my mind is starting to boggle, and fuck me if I can’t decide whether to laugh until I spew, or head straight to the toilet…..

#9 Somehow I tangled you with Simone Watson as in the past I have considered you both on the same wave length as feminists!

Anyway my apologies under these circumstances, absolutely no whippings or domination, not into that, just like to see nice reasonably attractive women in their natural state!

Anyway if we happen to meet one day we can have a laugh, I hope! My wife is pretty broad minded, she would have to be to put up with me

The author Simone puts up harmless light smut then expect some back with the replies.

    Kind regards ladies from RCH.

Susan Brownmiller article on Heffy in the New York Times on 29 Sept is a must read:
“Holly Madison’s 2015 book “Down the Rabbit Hole” is an eye-popping account of her rigidly policed existence as one of Hef’s live-in girlfriends. The sex was mandatory and terrible. There was a 9 p.m. curfew. She felt so isolated that she considered suicide. I urge you to read the whole thing.”

Re #11: Robin, what on earth is your agenda? What are you on about? Have you got a problem with people who think that Heffner was a self indulgent adolescent sexist piece of shit with no values other than getting it off with someone who might as well have been an audio animatronic doll?

How do you justify his callow objectification of women into dehumanized things whose only value is their sexual compliance?

The boring but absolutely necessary politics of responsible life-giving and long term relationships that hold up the walls and roofs of the world, so that children can grow up in secure and grounded love, mentorship and firm governance, is set at nothing by guys like Heffner. His lousy values and miserable practices have been a plague that has helped ravish our social infrastructure and left it as shadow of itself.

What are you going to do about it Robin; fiddle while you watch the software city of our imagination burn down and descend into chaos? How do you think society can possibly function in a sustainable fashion populated with stranded women, infantile men and their juvenile sexual agenda inflated beyond all reason or accountability?

It isn’t just the natural environment that is in trouble. The time is arriving when we are going to have to have some real kick-arse social struggle to sort some of this stuff out because if we don’t, history will take its course, and it will be very messy.

#14 I dont have a problem in general but always remain suspicious of feminist agenda that overwhelmingly continues blames males for their lifes’ problems!

Despite the Hefner lifestyle, his hardly soft porn (actually what I term as smut) Playboy magazine content is low key stuff as compared to the absoluteful disgraceful content available on the Internet today.

Playboy as well as Pix, People and the Melbourne Truth were an integral part of growing up in the 1950 and 60’s Australia by being readily available for all.

Did you miss out on those opportunities with the girls and boys of your age at the time for a giggle and that is all it was fun and dare!

If the feminist zealots want something to bitch about then do something about today’s Internet as a surmountable problem for respect of women and not some magazine of a past era!

The Roman Empire ended awash in sin and debauchery, what makes anyone think the American Empire was going to be any different? Heffner was simply the publicity agent for that aspect of the decline.

Yes, Hef demeans women, but the culture behind the empire commodifies everything, including sex, which is a far, far bigger problem.

It is a world in which everything has a price but very little has any value.

#6 Christopher, your prose flow so machinegun-like one sometimes fails to notice that you are making eminent good sense. Like Isla (#7), I’m with you on this one. But I still can’t find myself disliking the bloke — he certainly had the courage to stand against the US establishment on several issues, starting with the McCarthy era; and I can’t imagine how much B-grade actor Ronald Reagan must have hated him.

HH left a cultural harm to all women and our daughters and granddaughters. Culture is powerful in shaping our ideas about ourselves, our relationships with others and the natural world.

With his death we say goodbye to the ‘bunny’. Let that sink into collective female consciousness.
On the same day that HH died, a Greek temple of the Goddess Artemis was discovered:
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-4928968/Century-long-search-temple-Artemis-over.html

Let all women contemplate on the archetypal qualities of Artemis and be inspired by her qualities. This is how Artemis dealt with a man who objectified her:
Artemis was bathing with her nymphs. Actaeon, who was on a hunt with his dogs and saw her naked, not with eyes of worship but of lust.
Seeing the improper look in his eyes she splashed him with water and he was turned into a stag, and his own dogs consumed him.

Artemis is a Goddess of nature, the huntress, the initiator, she sorts the worthy from unworthy.

HH is dead, his reign is over.

Bring on the powerful, self assured female.

#18 ” Bring on the powerful self assured female”

Australian sport has recently seen the rise of female cricket and football teams who are adequately reimbursed for their professional efforts.

As this happening, this leaves those protesting female liberation feminists as old school.

Good to see Robin, that the influence of women sport teams in AFL and cricket is having a big effect on all masculine sport culture. My son plays AFL in local club. He has seen a shift of culture for the better. Gone are the nearly nude posters of women on a clubs’ walls.
Girls are being seen as respected and capable athletes, not just passive admirers of active and athletic boys. He is friends with many girl football players.
My brother coaches his daughter as she prepares for her national soccer competition games. She is only 12, playing in an under 14 team. She is strong and determined and is growing up in a much more supportive culture that I have been. Although she still has to fight pressure at school, because she doesn’t ‘perform femininity right’.

This is exactly the effect of feminist consciousness raising, regardless if those women are or call themselves feminists.

Germaine Greer has said something important when commenting on women playing male dominated sports. She said that she is looking to times where women not just play sports invented by men but lead in creating their own associations and activities that are culturally and economically valued and supported.

There are many goals for liberation aside from entering male dominated arenas. Because of what patriarchy is – male dominated, male centred institutions (religion, law, state, economic systems) liberation’s goal is to bring female centred focus to those areas. With this address fully and effectively, environmental destruction, rape, poverty and war, which patriarchy creates and perpetuates.

As you can see the goals of liberation for women are all encompassing.

Death of HH is a relief. The work continues.

The only Playboys I got to see were discarded ones left at certain premises I frequently hung around because the ladies and their minders were very nice to such a young street kid. Gave me food and at times a place to sleep in exchange for running errands and delivering messages for them.

How many women were forced to pose for Playboy, become involved with Hefner or others in the glossy magazine industry, none. They flock like flies to it.

Today you still read about these rich blokes with lots of women hanging off them and then you read of the huge number of gold digger women who get involved with blokes for money and privilege and they are not forced in any way.

That’s the worst kind of prostitution, because it’s deceitful . Yet the PC crew never say a word because all they are interested is in putting men down at any cost.

So the holier than thou PC nutters deride these people who are really just making a living. My expedience growing up was, the nicest, kindest, most reliable people were the ones the PC drop kicks deride.

It was the pillars of society that were the ones to look out for, the sleazy lawyers and academics, religious preachers, church members, politicians and senior bureaucrats who were the real villains.

Let’s not forget the sleazy shop keepers who offered young kids rewards for coming into the back room with them. Or the leaders of youth groups who had wandering hands for both boys and girls, all pillars of society and most god-fearing Christians.

I’d sit beside the Hefners of this world long before I’d get within a light year of the so-called pillars of society or the useless PC drop kicks. They are the only problem, not the men and women of the oldest industries on the planet.

Nothing like changing definitions of necessary aspects of life to suit your warped agenda eh #22.

Desperation to force illusionary fantasy onto others always takes precedence over fact and reality, which is the paramount aim of an ideologue.

So funny and laughably enjoyable, keep it up, haven’t had such a good laugh for awhile.

Not even going to attempt to answer such a ridiculously stupid and extremely false statement. Your higher education certainly has empowered you with the most incorrect understanding of life possible, hence the state of our societies controlled by your ilk.

As usual you conveniently forget all those involved with Playboy were there voluntarily and paid very well. The women would line up in their thousands to get jobs at Playboy, no collusion, nor force, just job ads were needed.

But when you haven’t had a real life, just an empty elitist ego trip, what else do you have but simmering dissatisfaction.

MTR has this to reveal about Heffner’s warped agenda:

‘Hefner was a man who, according to his valet, liked to see women suffer:

“He was more interested in watching. He would hire famous male porn stars, including John Holmes, with huge penises and watch them have sex with different girls he brought in. Hugh sat there in his favorite chair, smoking a joint and eating red licorice and watching. I had to go into the room afterwards and if the girls couldn’t walk, I would have to escort them to the bedrooms so they could recuperate. Hef sometimes gave bonuses to the women because the sex acts were so painful.”

And while Hefner kept the local cosmetic surgery practice in business, too bad if your breast implants burst:

“Hef wasn’t a kind man … He was very brutal to his girlfriends and sex partners. He made sure they had breast implants. In those days, the implants were new and they would shift and burst and I witnessed many women who had this done begging and crying to Hef to help them and he would put them back in the hospital and then discard these women. He didn’t care. They were disposable.”

A high number of Playmates have died young from drug overdose, suicide, homicide, or some other unnatural cause, including Bill Cosby’s particular favourite who later ended it all with a bullet to the head.’
