Labor committed to Strahan Wharf and Sara Island projects

Labor ready to support the West Coast in government
Labor’s commitment to the West Coast has been demonstrated with a $1 million commitment to two major tourism infrastructure projects.
A Majority Labor Government will fully fund the Strahan Visitor Centre and Gordon River projects identified in the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania ‘Future Proofing Our Icons’ report.
Labor Leader Rebecca White and Member for Braddon Shane Broad visited the West Coast today to announce the funding, which would come from Labor’s $50 million Long Term Regional Tourism Strategy.
“Labor’s committing $700,000 for the Strahan Wharf Tourism Zone to enhance the Strahan Visitor Centre and $300,000 for visitor infrastructure on Sara Island,” Ms White said.
“These are two great projects and the Tourism Industry Council has rightly identified them as priorities for West Coast tourism.”
Shadow Tourism Minister Scott Bacon said the funding will help unlock economic benefits for the West Coast.
“The Strahan Visitor Centre is the third busiest visitor information centre in the state behind Hobart and Launceston and turns over $750,000 in bookings each year. The facility is in dire need of an upgrade,” Mr Bacon said.
“The Sara Island project will further enhance the iconic Gordon River cruise experience by upgrading signage, pathways and shelters.
“On top of backing the two projects, Labor will also commit $50,000 for a West Coast tourism brand strategy.
“The region has so much to offer visitors to Tasmania and needs to be supported by a clear strategic approach.”
Braddon Labor MP Shane Broad reiterated Labor’s commitment to the region.
“Labor has been a loud voice for the West Coast over the past three years and is ready to follow through on that support in government,” Dr Broad said.
