The Liberal Government is committed to making Tasmania a safer place and ensuring women and children are protected from violence.

That’s why we are uniting with the Commonwealth and other States and Territories to jointly fund Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) to address the high rates of domestic and family violence.

In the 2012-13 financial year there were 2,530 reported incidents of family violence in Tasmania, 1,267 cases in the South, 598 in the North and 665 in the West.

It is a tragic reminder domestic violence affects many families across the State. These statistics are unacceptable.

The Liberal Government has a long term plan for Tasmania and as Minister for Women, I am committed to making our State safer for women and children.

To achieve this end, the Liberal Government will invest $35,000 per year to help ANROWS research the driving factors behind violence against women so we can better tailor our response.

By helping fund this new organisation, we are helping to build a strong evidence base for a coordinated national response.

I am confident that by working collaboratively across the Women’s Sector and with the Federal Government, we will make Tasmania a safer place for women and children.
Jacquie Petrusma, Minister for Women
