Snowy Mountains Brewery Crackenback Pale Ale
NSW | 4.9 per cent alcohol
This is my favourite from the Snowy Mountain Brewery quartet, which also includes Charlotte’s Hefeweizen, Bullocks Pilsner and Razorback Red Ale.
It’s quite a heavily hopped ale made with a blend of chinook hops, which provide a cleansing belt of bitterness, and amarillo and cascade hops, which tend towards the aromoatic, almost floral side. Mix these characters with the full, rich characters derived from some very high quality malted barley and you get a very satisfying beer.
As with all good pale ales, the term “pale” is purely relative. It’s much lighter and more golden than the typical dark ales you’d expect from England or Belgium, but it has much more colour than a glass of VB … not to mention one helluva lot more taste.
