Tackling work health and safety in southern Tasmania

Posted on

There are few things in life more important than your own or a loved one’s health and wellbeing,
which is why WorkSafe Tasmania is calling on Tasmanians to register for one of the many free
information sessions being held in Hobart during WorkSafe Tasmania Month 2013.

WorkSafe Tasmania spokesperson Dr Rob Walters, said WorkSafe Tasmania Month is part of a
nationwide effort to raise awareness about work, health and safety, as well as reduce work-related
injury, illness and death.

“Two weeks of free work, health and safety-focussed events will be held in Hobart as part of
WorkSafe Month from 30 September – 11 October 2013,” Dr Walters said.

“Topics to be explored range from managing alcohol and other drugs in the workplace and surviving
a safety audit, to bullying in the workplace and quad bike safety, to name just a few.

“For the first time, WorkSafe Tasmania Month will also feature a Tradeshow in Hobart to provide
Tasmanians with easy access to practical tools and resources for managing health and safety in the
workplace.

“Hobart will also play host to a workplace Bocce team challenge event on the lawns at Parliament
Square in Hobart from 4–6.30pm on Friday, 11 October.

“Hosted by Life.Be in it. this physical group activity highlights that bocce is a fun and relaxing sport
suitable for all ages, fitness levels and abilities.”

Dr Walters said bullying in the workplace would also be a hot topic for discussion, with a workplace
bullying conference to be held at Wrest Point on Tuesday, 8 October from 9am-4pm.

“The one-day conference will delve into the findings of a recent survey into workplace bullying in the
State, explore the opportunities for a proposed WorkCover Tasmania Board strategy for reducing
the impact of bullying behaviour as well as the national code of practice on this issue and its
relevance to Tasmanian workplaces,” he said.

“The conference will also provide delegates with practical guidance on managing bullying complaints
in the workplace.”

A Program of Events for the Month is now available online, outlining the wide range of free events
being held in Launceston, Hobart, and Burnie and on King and Flinders Islands. For more
