The main part of Van Diemen’s Land, with its vivid reinterpretation of convict life in the colony, is a solid and significant addition to Australian colonial history. The appendix on the frontier and the Aboriginal removals is a provocative piece that should spark debate, which is probably why it was included. However, this debate should not overshadow the scholarly achievement of the main part of the book. Read more here
